Byroads is a small, Australian based specialist tour company….
…. and it’s the way we do things that sets us apart from most other operators.

Inspiring journeys & diversions

A byroad is a road less travelled and this encapsulates the spirit of our tours. You can expect to see all the highlights of the region you have chosen to explore, but we also include interesting diversions to really special places we’ve discovered, over many years of travel to these wonderful regions.

Small groups

Our groups are limited to just 16 participants.  That’s large enough to provide some diversity but small enough to feel you are on holiday with a group of friends.  Importantly, by strictly limiting numbers we have access to small boutique hotels, many of which only have 10-15 rooms.

Our accommodation

The hotels we use are an important element of each tour and wherever possible we select small establishments that reflect the character of the region we are visiting. Historic Ottoman mansions, fabulous Moroccan riads, lovely village hotels in Andalusia, pensions, and traditional old homes are just some of the places we include on our trips. These can be anything three-star to five-star, but the star rating is not really that important. What matters to us is the atmosphere, service and staff – some of whom are old friends that look forward to our next visit. If we can’t find a place with atmosphere we stay somewhere clean and comfortable, close to the major sights. In each brochure we give full details of the accommodation we have selected for your tour.

A careful balance

An important feature of our tours is the balance of sightseeing and free time. As far as possible we try to avoid early starts and long days and we don’t cram too much into each day. Our sightseeing is carefully selected and you’ll find there is sufficient free time for you to explore on your own and ‘smell the roses’.

Delicious food

Part of the fun of travel is trying out the local food. Breakfast is included each day but for the rest of the time we recommend local restaurants for lunches and dinners. In more remote areas we include both lunch and dinner, particularly if there are no good restaurants nearby.
